JLM DaydreamerZ

The Z Generation in higher education — A design-led program for R&Ding new teaching & learning formats

Joint R&D groups / Five days of learning and working, May-June 2023 / The new Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Bezalel Campus in central Jerusalem / Submission Closed

The Program

We’re delighted to invite you, lecturers, students and graduates (who have completed their studies in the last three years) from the member institutes of JLM Impact (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Azrieli College of Engineering Jerusalem, and the Bezalel Academy of Art and design) to submit your candidacy for DaydreamerZ, a design-led program that offers its participants an accelerated process of R&Ding new teaching and learning formats adjusted to the challenges of Z generationers in higher education.

A maximum of 24 participants will be admitted to the program. They will work in four multidisciplinary and multicampus development teams, each around one shared idea. The formats developed can be of different kinds (teaching, learning and evaluation approaches; physical and digital teaching and learning tools; processes and services; learning environments), scales (lesson, course, program, school, institute), and contexts (teaching, learning, research, entrepreneurship, academic and administrative management).

The program will run from May to June 2023, and include five intensive learning and working days, in which the participants will benefit from all the conditions necessary for effective short-term learning and working: access to cutting edge knowledge, experts, prototype designers, field observations, contextual learning, templates and formats, work space, food, and lodging if necessary. Above all, they will profit from inspiration! The programs’ objective is to enable the participants to develop concrete, practical products that can be implemented in their courses, programs and campuses, distributed further afield, and even proposed to grants and conferences

Schedule

  • Monday, May 1, 10:00-17:00Division into groups, selection and preliminary formulation of ideas
  • Tuesday, May 2, 10:00-17:00Researching and delving deeper into the challenge and concept
  • Wednesday, June 7, 10:00-18:00Concept development and prototyping
  • Thursday, June 8, 10:00-17:00User tests and product improvement
  • Thursday, June 29, 10:00-17:00 Demo Day: presenting and distributing the products to stakeholders

In addition to the physical meetings, a mentoring session will be held towards the last meeting with each group via Zoom, to plan the product’s implementation and distribution and to prepare the presentation.

The program will be held on the Innovation Floor of the new Bezalel campus, on Zmora 1 St., Jerusalem.

Proposal Submission

Lecturers, students and graduates (who have completed their studies in the last three years) from the member institutions of JLM Impact of all disciplines programs and years are invited to submit their candidacy.
The submission process includes three simple steps, as follows:

1. Choosing (an) opportunity area(s):

Digital creativity

How might we enable the students to act as creators, to generate and implement their knowledge using digital technologies?

Microlearning

How might we create meaningful learning experiences in short timespans using immersive media and captivating storytelling?

Informational literacy

How might we promote the students’ ability to filter and analyze huge chunks of data and turn them into the effective knowledge they need for their learning?

Independent learning

How might we enable the students to act as independent leaners, who manage and lead their own learning experience in a dynamic and ongoing manner?

Global entrepreneurship and impact

How might we allow the students to act as entrepreneurs, create impact and have a positive social and environmental effect in the course of their studies?

2. Preliminary and brief proposal for an idea for a new teaching and learning format and/or joining others’ ideas in which you have personal or professional interest and knowledge.

The need to suggest an idea or join an existing one derives from the fact that groupwork will begin right from the first session. Importantly, the proposed ideas will be used as the teams’ starting point for discussing and finalizing the shared formats.

3. Providing your personal details.

The application must be submitted by March 29th, 2023, through the Miro board below (you can open it as a full window by clicking here). If you encounter difficulty working with the board, you are invited to contact us and we will guide you personally (see Moran’s contact details below), or alternatively submit through a standard form here.

* Participation requires physically attending all meetings.
** All candidates will receive confirmation of their submissions and save the dates.

Proposal Selection

The proposals will be reviewed and selected by a committee including representatives of the three JLM institutes, according to the following criteria:

  • The format’s potential value for various stakeholders with reference to the selected opportunity.
  • The format’s relevance for academic departments and units in member institutes and beyond.
  • Feasibility.
  • Diversity in all formats developed.
  • Diversity in the participants’ disciplines and skills.

The proposals must address a format that can be used on existing/funded teaching and learning settings. Ideas that offer a new course or formats that have already been developed and are implemented in full will be rejected.

Responses will be sent back by April 8th.
